Spring football games are meant to offer a glimpse of a team's potential, but at Virginia Tech's annual Maroon-Orange scrimmage, the pre-game show nearly stole the spotlight. Before the players even took the field at Lane Stadium, a planned patriotic entrance took an unexpected turn.
A skydiver, part of a team scheduled to land on the field carrying an American flag, was waylaid by gusty winds. Instead of a graceful touchdown, the diver found themselves entangled on the stadium's massive scoreboard, requiring a rescue operation.
According to reports, the team had already made two previous attempts to land amid the challenging conditions. The diver remained stuck on the board for approximately 30 minutes before being safely retrieved. Officials confirmed the entire skydiving team was unharmed following the incident.
While the Hokies' new offensive schemes were the day's intended focus, the daring—and ultimately safe—rescue provided fans with an unforgettable moment of unexpected drama before the first snap.
