The Philadelphia 76ers may have had a season to forget, but rookie guard VJ Edgecombe made sure it was one to remember.
Selected with the No. 3 overall pick, Edgecombe emerged as the brightest light in an otherwise cloudy 2025-26 campaign. The explosive guard put up impressive numbers across the board—16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per game—while shooting 43.8% from the field and 35.4% from beyond the arc.
His rookie season was filled with highlight-reel moments. He cracked the 30-point mark three times, including a jaw-dropping 34-point debut against the Boston Celtics on opening night. But it was his playoff performance that truly turned heads: in Game 2 of the first round against those same Celtics, Edgecombe dropped 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, becoming the first rookie to achieve a 30-10 playoff game since Tim Duncan back in 1998.
That kind of company puts things in perspective. But for Edgecombe, the postseason was a mixed bag. After a strong start against Boston, the New York Knicks threw different defensive looks at him, and the results were uneven.
"It's been a lot of ups and downs throughout this whole playoffs," Edgecombe admitted after the Sixers were eliminated by the Knicks. "Even for me personally, with playing against the Celtics, to now against New York. It was tricky. I was guarded differently. I'm gonna take some time, look back at it after a couple weeks, and just get better."
The numbers back up his honesty. His playoff shooting dipped to 29.2% from three and 41.4% overall—a drop that clearly stings a competitor like him. But rather than dwell on it, Edgecombe is channeling that frustration into fuel.
"I refuse," he said, his voice firm. "Coming into next year, a team will never leave me open. Even during the regular season, I was shooting the ball pretty well. Then playoffs come and it's a different vibe. Intensity's higher. The close-outs are a lot quicker. But I'm gonna work. That's all I'm gonna do."
With the Sixers now clearly in a new era—one built around Tyrese Maxey and Edgecombe—the pressure is on for the young guard to take that next step. If his words are any indication, he's already locked in. The gym is calling, and VJ Edgecombe isn't planning on hanging up anytime soon.
