“Should Be a Suspension”: Victor Wembanyama Faces Scrutiny for Controversial Elbow on Naz Reid After Ejection

The frustrations reached a boiling point for Victor Wembanyama as no calls throughout the series got to him. In Game 4 of the Conference Semifinals, the San Antonio Spurs star faced his first career ejection.

The tension had been building all series for Victor Wembanyama. Frustrated by what he felt was a lack of calls, the San Antonio Spurs superstar finally reached his breaking point in Game 4 of the Conference Semifinals—resulting in his first career ejection. But the drama may not end there, as fans and analysts are now calling for a suspension that could jeopardize his availability for the remainder of the series.

Coming off a dominant Game 3 performance—39 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks—Wembanyama was locked in against the Minnesota Timberwolves. But the physicality of the series was clearly wearing on him. With just under nine minutes left in the second quarter of Game 4, the Spurs center grabbed a rebound over Naz Reid. As he was swarmed by Reid and Timberwolves wing Jaden McDaniels, something snapped.

Wembanyama turned, looked directly at Reid, and swung his elbow into Reid's throat. The referees immediately stepped in, with Terrence Shannon Jr. pulling Reid toward the baseline to prevent any escalation. As the officials reviewed the play, Timberwolves fans chanted, "Throw him out!"—and that's exactly what happened. After the review, the referee explained: "There is wind-up, impact, and follow-through above the neck of an opponent. It is unnecessary and excessive contact. This meets all criteria for a Flagrant Foul Penalty 2. Wembanyama has been ejected."

Cameras caught Wembanyama asking veteran teammate Harrison Barnes, "What does it mean? I'm ejected?" After the confirmation, he got up, cheered on his teammates, and high-fived every player and staff member he could find on the bench. His ejection came with the Timberwolves holding a slim two-point lead, and backup center Luke Kornet struggling in limited minutes throughout the series. The Spurs currently lead the series 2-1, but this incident could have major implications for Game 5.

While a Flagrant 2 foul does not automatically trigger a suspension, the NBA has the authority to review dangerous plays and impose additional discipline. With the series hanging in the balance, all eyes will be on the league's decision—and on whether Wembanyama's emotions got the better of him at the worst possible time.
