Ex-Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore avoided jail time Tuesday, April 14, when a judge sentenced him in connection to criminal charges.

Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore will not serve jail time after being sentenced on Tuesday, April 14th, in connection to criminal charges. The charges stemmed from a 2025 incident at the home of a woman with whom he had a two-year affair.

14A District Court Judge J. Cedric Simpson sentenced Moore to 18 months of probation, approximately $1,100 in fees, and mandated that he continue mental health treatment, avoid alcohol, and have no contact with the woman involved. While the judge also ordered a 180-day and a separate 30-day sentence, both terms were suspended, meaning Moore will avoid incarceration if he successfully complies with his probation.

In explaining his decision, Judge Simpson stated, "I don't believe... incarceration would be an appropriate sentence." However, he was direct in his rebuke of Moore's actions, telling him, "Frankly Mr. Moore, you had no right to do what you did...you had no right to spread your pain to her."

The judge revealed that the most significant factor in his sentencing was a letter written to the court by Moore's wife, Kelli. Simpson praised her strength, referencing the "terror in her voice" when she called police the day her husband was fired by the university, and noted he could hear their children in the background. "The person who is saving Moore from the 'full wrath of this court is the one you betrayed,'" Simpson said, directly addressing the former coach. "I am amazed by you, Ms. Moore. I truly am... I think, in all honesty... we need more people like you in this world."

Moore, who nodded at times during the judge's comments about his wife, will have a review hearing scheduled for October 2027. The case concludes a difficult chapter for the former coach, whose personal conduct stands in stark contrast to the discipline and leadership typically demanded on the football field.
