Shai Gilgeous-Alexander did not just lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a dominant sweep; he made sure the message lingered long after the final buzzer.

The Thunder’s first-round series against the Phoenix Suns carried tension from the start, fueled by comments, matchups and a growing edge between players on both sides.

By the time the series ended, that tension had clearly not gone away, and once the sweep was complete, Shai chose his moment to respond in a way that quickly caught the attention of the entire NBA.

As seen via Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Instagram post, the Thunder star did not hold back.

“Everybody wants to be villainous until the brooms come out & the dust settles & you realize who the villain is,” SGA wrote.

The post featured a collage, including one image where Shai edited Dillon Brooks’ jersey to read “Cancun on 3,” a well-known NBA phrase used to mock eliminated teams.

The message was clear. After all the talk during the series, Shai felt the result spoke for itself.

Throughout the series, Brooks leaned into his “villain” persona, at one point calling Shai “frail” and accusing him of drawing fouls through flopping. That added an edge to the matchup, especially with both players playing major roles for their teams.

On the court, though, it was one-sided. The Thunder completed a 4-0 sweep, with Shai averaging nearly 34 points and controlling the tempo across all four games.

That performance made the post feel less like random trash talk and more like a response that had been building all series.

Brooks did not ignore it either. He fired back in the comments, writing, “Sounds like a ghost writer – The Villain,” keeping the exchange going even after elimination.

Despite the back-and-forth, there is still mutual respect between the two, especially as teammates on the Canadian national team. But in the middle of a playoff series, that respect clearly took a back seat.
