The Georgia Bulldogs basketball program is facing a significant roster overhaul this offseason, with forward Jaden Newell becoming the seventh player to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Newell announced his decision on Tuesday, April 7th, the very day the portal opened for business.
Newell's journey at Georgia is a story of perseverance. He arrived as a walk-on but earned a scholarship, evolving into a valued "glue-guy" for a team that made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in his final two seasons. His connection to the program runs deep; he is the older brother of former Georgia star and 2025 NBA draft first-round pick, Asa Newell, whose commitment was partly influenced by having his brother on the team.
Despite his team-first contributions, playing time was scarce. The 2025-2026 season saw Newell log just 12 minutes across nine games, scoring two points. Now set to graduate from Georgia with a degree in biology, his decision to seek a larger role elsewhere is a logical next step for his athletic career.
His departure underscores a major transition in Athens. Of the 14 Bulldogs who played at least one minute last season, half are now expected to exit via the portal, not including two players who have exhausted their eligibility. Only three have confirmed their return for next season, leaving Head Coach Mike White with considerable work to rebuild the squad.
In a heartfelt social media post, Newell expressed his gratitude: "After much prayer and careful consideration, I have made the decision to continue that growth by entering the transfer portal. Thank you, Georgia. I will always bleed red and black. Go Dawgs!" As the portal churns, all eyes will be on how Georgia reloads for the challenges of the upcoming SEC season.
