Manchester United's momentum hit a speed bump at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, May 9, as the Red Devils were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Sunderland in the Premier League. For the first time since caretaker manager Michael Carrick took the reins, United failed to find the back of the net—a stark contrast to their thrilling 3-2 victory over Liverpool just a week prior.

Carrick shuffled the lineup with five changes, though two were more necessity than choice. Star striker Benjamin Sesko was sidelined after aggravating a shin injury against Liverpool, while midfield anchor Casemiro was also absent—a void that proved costly. Without Casemiro's steel in the middle, United looked vulnerable, and Mason Mount struggled to make an impact in an unfamiliar role, leaving gaps that Sunderland eagerly exploited.

But if the Red Devils escaped with a point, they have one man to thank: goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The 23-year-old Belgian was the hero, standing tall when his team needed him most. Just a week after making his first major mistake since joining United—a blunder that gifted Liverpool a goal—Lammens bounced back in spectacular fashion. He made amends with a crucial save against the Reds, and against Sunderland, he was simply impenetrable.

Sunderland dominated proceedings, firing off 15 shots with nine of those coming from inside the box. Yet, Lammens refused to budge. He registered 39 touches, completed 18 of 32 passes, and launched 22 long balls, eight of which found their target. His four saves included two standout stops against Brian Brobbey and Noah Sadiki, and he showed tremendous bravery by charging off his line on multiple occasions to snuff out danger. Statistically, Lammens prevented 2.05 goals—a testament to his shot-stopping prowess—and secured his seventh clean sheet of the season.

Despite the dropped points, United remain third in the Premier League table, though the gap to fourth-placed Liverpool has narrowed to six points after the Reds managed only a 1-1 draw elsewhere. For Carrick and his squad, the performance was a reminder that even the best bandwagons hit a pothole—but with Lammens between the posts, there's always a safety net.
