Get ready to celebrate some incredible high school sports achievements! The latest Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week honors have been awarded, and it's all about doubles dominance on the tennis court.
First up, the Amarillo High girls doubles team of Olivia Hefley and Sara Shelhamer took the top spot for May 4-9. These two stars clinched the Class 5A girls doubles state championship with a thrilling three-set victory against Frisco Wakeland. Their performance was so impressive that they earned a whopping 10,151 out of 16,320 total votes—that's 62.2% of the vote, a true testament to their skills and the community's support.
But the tennis action didn't stop there. The Randall mixed doubles tandem of Jensen Betzen and Kynley Craddock also secured Athlete of the Week honors, proving that teamwork and talent go hand in hand. Meanwhile, standout athlete Gibson made headlines with a clutch performance, going 2-for-3 at the plate and smashing a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge out West Plains 1-0. Talk about a game-changer!
Here's how the voting works: Students in all varsity sports are eligible, but each athlete can only win once per season per sport, and no single school can claim the title more than three weeks in a row. To nominate a standout player, submit their stats and achievements by 5 p.m. each Saturday to sports@amarillo.com. Voting runs through Thursday, so make sure your favorite athlete gets the recognition they deserve.
Whether you're hitting the court, the field, or the diamond, these athletes remind us that hard work and determination pay off. Gear up for your next big game with confidence—just like these champions!
