For years, the Seattle Mariners' farm system has been one of the most talked-about in baseball—and for good reason. While most of the attention goes to their six top-100 prospects (according to MLB Pipeline), there are also rising talents like catcher Luke Stevenson who are knocking on that door. But one name that's already inside that elite circle is shortstop Felnin Celesten—and right now, he's playing the best baseball of his young career.
Signed by the Mariners out of the Dominican Republic back in January 2023, Celesten has been a top-100 prospect for most of his time in the organization. But his path hasn't been smooth. Injuries and inconsistency have been frequent hurdles. A hamstring issue and a broken wrist kept him out of summer ball in 2023 and limited him to just 32 games in the Arizona Complex League the following year. Even in 2024, when he finally played 104 games with the Single-A Modesto Nuts, he battled vertigo-like symptoms. Still, he managed a solid .273/.345/.375 slash line with 19 doubles, three triples, six homers, 59 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases.
The jump to High-A Everett wasn't kind to him at first. In 11 games with the AquaSox, Celesten hit just .158 with a .313 on-base percentage. But this season? A completely different story.
Healthy and locked in, the 20-year-old shortstop has been putting together his best season as a pro. Through 24 games with Everett, Celesten is slashing .295/.407/.420 with an .827 OPS, six doubles, a triple, a home run, 16 RBIs, and six stolen bases. He's finding gaps, getting on base at an elite clip, and showing the kind of all-around game that made him a top prospect in the first place. Just look at his recent game-tying, two-out RBI single—his seventh multi-hit game of the season—which pushed his batting average to .302.
For Mariners fans tracking the future of the infield, Celesten's breakout in Everett is a sign that the talent is finally matching the potential. And if he keeps this pace, he won't just be a top-100 prospect again—he'll be climbing the list.
