Is Carlos Prates on deck for a title shot after his UFC Perth main event win? We discuss his future.

Carlos Prates sent a thunderous message to the welterweight division at UFC Fight Night 275, dismantling Jack Della Maddalena in a performance that has fans and analysts buzzing. The Brazilian striker, now 24-7 MMA and 7-1 UFC, showcased a masterclass in striking from the opening bell, systematically breaking down Della Maddalena (18-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC) before securing a third-round TKO at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.

Since his UFC debut in 2024, Prates has been a knockout artist, finishing every opponent except Ian Machado Garry, who edged him in a competitive decision in April 2025. But the 28-year-old has rebounded in spectacular fashion, adding Geoff Neal, Leon Edwards, and now Della Maddalena to his highlight reel. The win over Della Maddalena was particularly impressive, as Prates displayed the depth of his striking arsenal against a notoriously durable opponent.

In his post-fight interview, Prates wasted no time staking his claim for a welterweight title shot. He outlined two compelling paths: challenging pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev or avenging his loss to Machado Garry with championship gold on the line. Both scenarios are tantalizing, especially with rumors swirling about a potential Makhachev vs. Machado Garry showdown at UFC 330 on August 15 in Philadelphia.

At this point, Prates has done everything necessary to earn a title opportunity. He's defeated two of the last four welterweight champions, and his striking power makes him a threat to anyone in the division. While Makhachev's wrestling presents a stylistic challenge, Prates' knockout ability ensures he's never out of a fight.

Some have suggested a No. 1 contender bout between Prates and undefeated Michael Morales, but the Brazilian has earned a direct path to the title. Morales, while talented, still needs a signature win to solidify his claim. Prates, meanwhile, has proven he belongs in championship conversations.

For now, the welterweight division is on notice. The Carlos Prates that stepped into the octagon in Perth looked every bit a future champion. Whether he faces Makhachev, Machado Garry, or another top contender, one thing is clear: the Brazilian is ready for his shot at glory.
