While Trautman's receiving stats from last season—20 catches for 195 yards and a touchdown—might not jump off the page, his value to the Broncos runs much deeper. Coach Payton, speaking at the NFL league meetings, emphasized that Trautman's true impact is measured in the trenches. "You know exactly what you’re getting in the player," Payton stated. "If we want to run the ball well, he’s one of the better blocking tight ends. He’s really good in pass protection... I’m glad he’s back."

Payton admitted that losing assistants to promotions with other clubs, like Declan Doyle to Baltimore, increased the risk of losing key free agents, as those departing coaches often target familiar players. "I don’t take him for granted," Payton said, highlighting the concern that Trautman could have been lured away.

Fortunately for Denver, Trautman chose to stay, opting for a fourth season in the Mile High City. Entering his seventh NFL campaign, the 29-year-old brings a reliable presence and a career resume of 115 receptions for 1,228 yards and 10 touchdowns. His return is a win for an offense that values toughness and consistency as much as big plays, solidifying the tight end room as the Broncos build for 2024.
