The Atlanta Braves left Los Angeles with a thrilling 7-2 victory over the Dodgers, but they also departed with two key players nursing injuries that could impact their upcoming series against the Chicago Cubs.
Catcher Sean Murphy, whose injury luck has been frustrating since joining the Braves before the 2023 season, is now dealing with a hand issue. Murphy made his 2026 season debut just this past road trip after missing the end of 2025 and the start of this year due to hip surgery. He has only played more than 100 games once as a Brave.
During Sunday's win, Murphy was called for catcher's interference when Hyeseong Kim's bat nicked him. He was replaced behind the plate by Drake Baldwin, who had been serving as the designated hitter. While initial reports were positive, the Braves announced late Sunday that they won't have an update on Murphy's hand or fingers until Tuesday.
If Murphy misses time, the Braves have veteran options at Triple-A in Chadwick Tromp and Sandy Leon, both of whom have been waiting since Spring Training. Should the injury prove significant, Atlanta could find themselves shopping for a high-end backup catcher again.
Meanwhile, outfielder Eli White is in concussion protocol after making one of the season's most spectacular defensive plays. With two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth inning, White crashed into the right-field wall to rob the Dodgers of a game-changing hit. He exited the game in the eighth inning, and multiple reports confirm he's now in the concussion protocol.
If White misses a few games, the Braves could activate Ha-Seong Kim ahead of the Cubs series, as Atlanta's bench has multiple outfield-capable players. Kim is nearing his season debut after a rehab assignment.
With Ronald Acuña Jr. still working his way back, the Braves' depth will be tested as they head to Chicago. Fans will be watching closely for Tuesday's updates on both players.
