When Sean McVay sat down for a "SportsCenter" interview Thursday night, he likely knew the Ty Simpson questions were coming. And just as predictably, the Rams head coach delivered a masterclass in coachspeak.

ESPN's Peter Schrager, a longtime friend of McVay's, tried to get the coach to open up about the team's top rookie pick. "Now that we are about a month removed, the Ty Simpson pick, what has been the fallout? And also, what are you guys thinking now that you're in the building and he's there with you in the fold?"

It was a fair question, but McVay wasn't biting. With Matthew Stafford firmly entrenched as the Rams' starter, praising a rookie quarterback too early could create unnecessary noise. So instead, McVay pivoted smoothly to talk about the team as a whole.

"The rookies have been here for a week," McVay said. "We're focusing on our team. It's been great to have our group in there, being able to get out on the field, do some stuff in the Phase 2, get into the meetings. I really love a lot of these guys, and I'm excited about building relationships with the new guys."

He went on to mention the 23 rookies currently in the building, including five draft picks and undrafted free agents, before emphasizing the importance of team chemistry and the returning core of players. "Every year is a new year, but it's been a lot of fun being able to get going on some football feeling like a coach again," he added.

For Rams fans eager for any insight into Simpson's development, it was a classic non-answer. But it's also a smart move from a coach who knows better than to create a quarterback controversy before training camp even begins. Simpson has barely had time to learn the playbook, let alone earn the kind of praise that would make headlines.

Expect more of these measured responses as the offseason continues. McVay is playing the long game, and for now, that means keeping the focus squarely on the team—not any one player.
