The Los Angeles Rams were the talk of the league on Thursday night. It started with their decision to draft Ty Simpson at No. 13 overall, which was a surprise on its own. But then Sean McVay's demeanor during his press conference with Les Snead drew a lot of attention.

McVay appeared unexcited and subdued during his media session, letting Snead do most of the talking while giving mostly brief answers to the questions he was asked about Simpson. It led to a lot of speculation that McVay wasn't on board with the decision to draft Simpson, but that's not the case.

After the third round of the draft on Friday night, McVay addressed his demeanor during the previous night's press conference and confirmed he and Snead "couldn't be more lockstep in every decision" that they make. He patted Snead on the back and called him his "buddy," cracking the smile and jokes we're used to seeing from the Rams' two leaders.

He got it out of the way right off the bat, too, joking with reporters as soon as he sat down.

"What do you guys think? Am I angry right now?" he joked, eliciting a laugh from the room.

He then got more serious, discussing his feelings about the pick.

"The one thing that would never be doubted is, we couldn't be more lockstep in every decision that we make," he said. "I get my demeanor last night. … We’re excited about it. Always want to be mindful of how things come off, things like that. Very excited about last night, very excited about today, and couldn’t be more excited about us continuing to get to lead together. But every decision we make is collective and collaborative. For any of the questions or misunderstandings based on my demeanor and disposition last night, I did want to get that out of the way. This is my buddy right here, all right? It was brought to my attention because I got so many texts. That was never my intended way to come off, but sometimes I can be a little grumpy.”

McVay was asked why he was "grumpy," as he put it. It sounds like the reason was unrelated to football, calling it "normal life." So it appears something outside the responsibilities of the job put him in an atypical mood for the usually energetic coach.

He also said his reaction would be naturally stoic because of the respect he has for Matthew Stafford, who the Rams drafted to eventually replace. McVay said Simpson's chance to be the successor will be on Stafford's terms, so it's not as if Los Angeles is preparing to move on from the reigning MVP.

“There was other things that had nothing to do with that, which that's normal life, but the main thing was I think, I couldn't be more excited about being able to add him, but also understanding of how much I love Matthew Stafford, how respectful you want to always be to just the way things can be interpreted," McVay said. "And so, the demeanor would have been stoic by nature because you are excited but it is Matthew's football team. Excited to be able to add Ty. What a blessing it is for him to be able to learn from Matthew, to be able to come into this atmosphere and environment. But, whenever that time comes for him to get an opportunity to be Matthew's successor will be on Matthew's terms. And I think that's really what the important thing was. And I didn't want that to ever be misunderstood, while not minimizing the excitement for Ty.”

After barely talking about Simpson's game on Thursday, McVay was much more talkative and engaging. He praised the young quarterback's resilience and toughness, even saying that some of his favorite moments from last season were in the second half of the year when he was forced to respond to some adversity.

McVay sounds happy about the selection and likes the ceiling Simpson has as a prospect, so the reading between the lines of his mood on Thursday night can come to an end.
