The South Dakota State Jackrabbits capped their spring practice slate with an energetic annual Spring Game this past Saturday. While the offense officially "won" the contest 24-17, the final score was secondary to the palpable sense of progress and stability surrounding the program.
This spring marked a stark contrast to the uncertainty of a year ago, which followed a coaching change and was clouded by the spring transfer portal window. With that window now closed, the roster that competed at the SJAC is the core group that will take the field in August, fostering a newfound confidence and cohesion.
Senior defensive tackle and captain Logan Green highlighted the difference, noting the team's solidified identity. "This is our team," Green said. "Competing over the last five weeks, you really see the culture taking shape."
The scrimmage itself was a competitive, back-and-forth affair, with both the offense and defense showcasing their strengths. The highlight of the day came from sophomore quarterback Jack Thue and tailback Ramon McKinney, a dynamic Division II transfer. Thue, under pressure, lofted a perfect pass down the sideline to McKinney, who then displayed impressive elusiveness, making multiple defenders miss on his way to a spectacular touchdown.
That play underscored the depth and competition within the quarterback room. With starter Chase Mason limited to 7-on-7 drills, Jacks fans got an extended look at Josh Holst, Jack Henry, Anthony Rezac, and Thue. Each signal-caller performed well, with Rezac connecting on a long touchdown to Eddie Schultz and Henry looking particularly sharp. The battle for the primary backup role promises to be a compelling storyline heading into summer workouts and fall camp.
Overall, the Jackrabbits demonstrated they are a deeper, more connected, and more confident team than they were a year ago, building significant momentum as they break for the summer.
