Thomas Tuchel has shaken things up with his provisional 55-man England squad for the World Cup, and some familiar faces are back in the conversation. Luke Shaw, Danny Welbeck, and Alex Scott are reportedly among the names on the preliminary list, signaling that Tuchel is keeping his options open as the tournament draws near.
FIFA gave participating nations until Monday at midnight to submit their long lists for the World Cup, which kicks off on June 11 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Tuchel now has the task of trimming that squad down to 26 players for the final roster, with the official announcement expected on Friday, May 22.
Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold has also made the preliminary cut, which is a bit of a surprise given his recent standing. He was left out of Tuchel's last squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, alongside Shaw, Welbeck, and Scott. But all four are now in the mix to make the trip across the Atlantic.
The right-back situation is particularly intriguing. Tuchel has preferred Chelsea's Reece James, Newcastle's Tino Livramento, and Arsenal's Ben White in that role, and last year even suggested Bayer Leverkusen's Jarrell Quansah was ahead of Alexander-Arnold. But injuries have thrown a wrench in those plans. White is a major doubt after suffering a knee injury in Sunday's win over West Ham, while Livramento is currently unavailable—though there's hope he'll be fit for the World Cup. James, Tuchel's first-choice right-back, has only just returned from injury himself.
Over on the left side, Shaw's return to form with Manchester United has put him back in the frame for an international recall. The 34-cap full-back hasn't played for England since the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, largely due to injuries, but he's been a regular for United this season with 36 appearances. That kind of consistency could be exactly what Tuchel needs as he builds his squad for the biggest stage in football.
