When the pressure is on, some athletes rise to the occasion—and Rosie Cantu of Sterling High School is proving she's one of them. The junior softball standout earned this week's Sauk Valley Athlete of the Week honors after a standout performance that helped her team keep its winning streak alive.
In an 8-5 Western Big 6 Conference victory against Rock Island, Cantu stepped up to the plate and delivered in a big way, crushing two home runs and driving in four RBIs. Her heroics powered Sterling (15-11, 7-5) to its fourth straight win, including three in conference play.
"Rosie is hardworking, pays attention to the details and is a pleasure to work with," said Sterling coach Donnie Dittmar. "Her game is improving every day, and we expect great things from her."
For Cantu, softball isn't just a sport—it's a family tradition. Born into a baseball and softball household, she credits her father, who has coached many of her teams, for keeping her game sharp. "He keeps me in shape," she said with a smile.
That foundation has taught her a simple but powerful lesson: "Always put the ball in play, even if it leads to an out." It's that kind of focus that has made her a force at the plate and a leader on the field.
Looking back at her season highlights, Cantu points to that same game against Rock Island, where she went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. But the team's success is just as important. "Something different about this year's team is we definitely have a lot more team chemistry," she said. "We're all friends with each other even outside of softball."
That chemistry will be key as the Golden Warriors push toward the postseason. Individually, Cantu has set a clear goal: "No more errors for the remainder of the season." As a team, the target is even bigger: "Get past regionals."
Her favorite memory? Hitting her first high school home run as a freshman—a game-tying blast in the bottom of the sixth inning. And a fun fact that shows her toughness? She broke her nose at age eight, never got it fixed, and now wears it as a crooked badge of honor.
When asked who inspires her, Cantu didn't hesitate: her older cousin Amayia Hernandez, a 2021 Sterling graduate who smashed 11 home runs her senior season. "She's an amazing role model," Cantu said.
Off the field, Cantu keeps things simple. She loves exploring new things, has a soft spot for Taco Bell's grilled cheese burrito, and admits math has always been her favorite subject. "I always found it easy," she said.
With her power at the plate, her attention to detail, and a team that's clicking at the right time, Rosie Cantu is proving she's not just an athlete of the week—she's one to watch for the rest of the season.
