The Texas Longhorns' wide receiver room has been the talk of the offseason, thanks to the high-profile arrivals of transfers Cam Coleman from Auburn and Emmitt Mosley V from Wake Forest. Their additions have rightly generated excitement, but head coach Steve Sarkisian is sending a clear message to the fanbase: don't sleep on returning star Ryan Wingo.
Amid the buzz around new faces, Sarkisian made a compelling case for the veteran. "I feel like we’ve forgotten about Ryan Wingo," Sarkisian said. "This guy was a second-team all-SEC receiver and had over 850 yards last year. We all loved Xavier Worthy when he was here, and in one year, I think he had about 700 yards. And all of a sudden we're going to forget about Ryan Wingo? He's a really good player."
While Coleman has been turning heads with spectacular catches in spring practice, Sarkisian believes Wingo's proven track record and steady presence elevate the entire unit. "We're fortunate to have him to go along with Cam and Emmitt," Sark noted. "As Ryan has come back into the fold, it's like, 'Wow, this guy's really good.' He continues to get better from where he was his freshman year to where he is now."
Wingo has been managing a thumb/wrist injury that required offseason surgery, but his recovery is on track. "It's getting better for sure," Wingo said. "Some stuff I am getting held out of, but I'm catching and stuff like that." All signs point to him being fully ready when the season kicks off in September.
For a Texas offense looking to make another championship run, having a deep and talented receiver corps is paramount. Sarkisian's reminder underscores that the Longhorns' aerial attack will be fueled not just by shiny new additions, but by a seasoned playmaker ready to build on an impressive sophomore campaign.
