After six and a half trophy-laden years, Chelsea has announced that Australian international Sam Kerr will leave the club at the end of the season. The striker, who joined the Blues in January 2020 from the Chicago Red Stars, has been a cornerstone of the team's dominance in the Women's Super League (WSL).
During her time in west London, the 32-year-old has won five WSL titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups, and the Community Shield. She currently sits second on Chelsea's all-time scoring list with 115 goals in 177 appearances—just one goal behind her former teammate Fran Kirby. Kerr's consistency in front of goal has been remarkable, as she was the club's top scorer in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons, also claiming the WSL Golden Boot.
Reflecting on her tenure, Kerr said, "When I reflect on my Chelsea career and doing it for the last time, I just feel happy. Happy that it happened, and I feel so grateful to have played for this club for six years and won as many trophies as we could."
Her impact extended beyond domestic competitions. In the 2022/23 season, she netted 29 goals in 38 games, helping Chelsea secure a domestic double and earning her the club's Player of the Season award, as well as the WSL Player of the Year and FWA Women's Footballer of the Year honors. In October 2023, she finished second in the Ballon d'Or awards, behind Aitana Bonmatí.
Kerr's departure marks the end of an era for Chelsea, but her legacy as one of the most prolific forwards in women's football is secure. As she prepares to play her final match against Manchester United this Saturday, fans can look back on a career that redefined excellence in the sport.
