It looks like Sam Dekker has traded in his sneakers and jersey for khakis and a polo, taking an assistant coaching job at South Carolina on May 15.

Sam Dekker is swapping his sneakers and jersey for a clipboard and whistle. The former Wisconsin Badgers star and Sheboygan Lutheran legend has officially embarked on a new chapter in basketball, accepting an assistant coaching role at the University of South Carolina. The Gamecocks announced the hire on May 15, welcoming the former NBA first-round pick to their staff.

For Dekker, this move feels less like a career shift and more like a natural progression. Known for his detailed breakdowns of the game on social media, he has long displayed a coach's mind. It also runs in the family—his father, Todd Dekker, was his longtime coach at Sheboygan Lutheran, laying the groundwork for Sam's understanding of leadership and player development.

After a professional career that included stints with the Houston Rockets and several overseas teams, including a recent two-year run in Spain, Dekker is ready to share his experience. Injuries may have derailed what could have been a career on par with fellow Wisconsin hoops standouts like Tyler Herro or Tyrese Haliburton, but his journey has uniquely equipped him to mentor the next generation.

The fit in Columbia is particularly strong. Gamecocks head coach Lamont Paris served as an assistant under Bo Ryan during Dekker's time at Wisconsin, giving the two an established rapport. "Sam's unique experiences and skill set will allow him to have a tremendous impact on our players and program immediately," the team noted. "He is a winner through and through."

For Dekker, this is more than a job—it's a homecoming to the sidelines, where his basketball IQ can shine in a new, impactful way.
