The New Orleans Saints, holding the No. 8 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, are in an intriguing position. With the promising emergence of quarterback Tyler Shough, the franchise is building momentum, and this draft could be a pivotal moment to add a game-changing talent.

Conventional wisdom suggests the Saints will target a wide receiver or an edge rusher with their first-round selection. Staying put at eighth overall would likely still net them a high-impact player at either position of need.

However, a bolder path is being discussed. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer has identified the Saints, alongside the Dallas Cowboys, as a team that could make an aggressive trade-up the draft board. The potential targets? Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love or, more intriguingly for New Orleans, Ohio State's dynamic edge rusher Arvell Reese.

While a move for a running back seems unlikely after the offseason signing of Travis Etienne Jr., a leap up the board for a premier pass rusher like Reese could be a different story. With top prospect David Bailey likely off the board before the Saints pick, Reese represents the other elite edge talent in this class. Securing him might require the kind of bold, future-shaping move the Saints have been known to make.

The trade-up strategy could also apply to the wide receiver position. If the Saints covet a prospect like Carnell Tate, they might need to jump ahead of receiver-needy teams like the Cleveland Browns (picking sixth), the New York Giants (fifth), or the Tennessee Titans (fourth). A strategic trade could position New Orleans to grab their preferred target before a rival team snaps him up.

As draft night approaches, the Saints have a clear choice: select a solid contributor at No. 8 or package assets for a dramatic move to secure a potential cornerstone player. For a team on the rise, aggression could be the key to taking the next step.
