The New Orleans Saints have officially signed former Ole Miss defensive tackle Zxavian Harris to a rookie free agent contract, making him the NFL's top undrafted prospect this year. Harris joined his fellow first-year pros at the team's rookie minicamp this weekend, though he's not expected to participate while recovering from March foot surgery. We'll be tracking his progress closely as he works toward full health this summer.
Harris was projected as a potential top-100 draft pick, but a combination of factors caused him to go undrafted. A foot injury detected at the NFL Combine in February, along with two arrests during his college career, made teams hesitant to invest a draft pick—and the guaranteed money that comes with it—in him. Inconsistencies on his game tape didn't help his stock either. Yet, all of that can be forgotten if Harris stays focused, gets healthy, and responds to coaching.
Standing at an imposing 6-foot-8 and 330 pounds, Harris is a towering athlete who improved year over year at Ole Miss. He helped lead the Rebels to the College Football Playoff semifinals last season with dominant performances against Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tulane, and Georgia. Conditioning will be a key area to watch, too, after a career-high 63 snaps against Miami wore him down in the playoffs. For now, his priority is getting his body right and competing for a roster spot in a crowded Saints defensive line group.
