Six years after their dominant run at Oregon, basketball stars Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally are reuniting on the court, this time with the New York Liberty. Their shared goal? To finally capture the championship that was cruelly snatched away from them in college.
“I still have unfinished business with Sab,” Sabally declared in her introductory press conference. “I would love to win with her. It's been such a long time since Oregon, but that is always something we still talk about." That unfinished business dates back to 2020, when their top-ranked Ducks squad, boasting a stellar 31-2 record, was the favorite to win the national title before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the NCAA Tournament.
Since entering the WNBA as the top two picks in the 2020 draft, their paths have been intertwined. Ionescu, the face of the Liberty, has already secured a WNBA championship in New York. Sabally, after stints with Dallas and Phoenix, reached the Finals last season but fell short. That near-miss has only sharpened her focus. “What I really wanted to do is win a championship," Sabally said. “I think that it's missing on my resume. I know I’m a great player, but I do want that ring.”
Now, by signing a two-year deal with the Liberty—a move followed by Ionescu’s own re-signing—Sabally has chosen her former teammate as the perfect partner to chase that elusive goal. This reunion in New York isn't just a nostalgic story; it's a powerhouse pairing with a clear mission. For two of the game's brightest stars, their shared history of heartbreak has forged a new beginning, and they're determined to write a championship ending together.
