The WNBA is set to tip off its landmark 30th season this Friday night, and while the excitement is palpable, the New York Liberty will have to navigate their season opener without one of their biggest stars. Sabrina Ionescu has been officially ruled out for Friday's matchup against the Connecticut Sun, leaving a significant gap in the Liberty's backcourt.
The injury stems from a preseason game earlier this month, where Ionescu landed awkwardly on a drive attempt. Though she was able to walk off the court under her own power, the Liberty's star guard was limited to just 16 minutes of action. An MRI later revealed no structural damage—a huge sigh of relief for the franchise—but the timeline for her return is at least two weeks, according to reports.
Ionescu's absence is no small matter. Last season, she averaged 18.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, serving as the engine of New York's offense. Her ability to stretch the floor and create plays will be sorely missed as the Liberty look to build on a 79-67 preseason win over the same Sun team. In that game, Jonquel Jones and Anneli Maley stepped up, combining for 28 points, but the focus quickly shifted to Ionescu's health.
Adding to the Liberty's challenges, offseason acquisition Satou Sabally will also miss the opener due to a cyst. The New York native signed a two-year, $1.6 million contract in the offseason after a lone season with the Phoenix Mercury, and fans will have to wait a bit longer to see her in Liberty blue. Additionally, Raquel Carrera and Leonie Fiebich are unavailable due to overseas commitments, thinning the roster even further.
For a team with championship aspirations, opening night without two key contributors is a tough hand to be dealt. But if the Liberty proved anything in the preseason, it's that they have depth and resilience. The question now is whether that depth can hold the fort until Ionescu and Sabally return to the court.
