The Buffalo Sabres have plenty of offseason decisions looming, with Alex Tuch dominating most of the headlines. But as the team pushes deeper into the playoffs, a quieter—yet equally intriguing—question is developing around towering defenseman Logan Stanley and his $1.25 million future.

At 6-foot-7, Stanley is impossible to miss on the ice. The Sabres acquired him from the Winnipeg Jets before the trade deadline, knowing full well he was a pending unrestricted free agent. For the Jets, an expiring contract held little value. For Buffalo, however, Stanley represented a physical, playoff-ready asset—exactly the kind of presence teams covet in a deep run.

Now, with the Sabres advancing to the second round, Stanley is nursing some bumps and bruises. But he's determined to get back on the ice and prove he's worth a solid payday this summer. His current $1.25 million salary makes him a bargain, but what comes next is far from certain.

Daily Faceoff's Matt Larkin recently broke down Stanley's situation, noting the wide range of outcomes following his trade to Buffalo. "A towering, mean defenseman with a heavy shot, he could establish himself as a difference maker on a team with potential to make a deep playoff run," Larkin wrote. "On the other hand: Stanley, a below-average defender, could be exposed or given limited minutes during the stretch run and postseason if he struggled."

So far, the numbers tell a cautious story. Stanley is averaging just 13:52 of ice time per game in the playoffs, primarily on the third pairing and second penalty-kill unit. Larkin observes that the trade "has hurt his wallet," but adds that Stanley still possesses enough perceived upside to land a multi-year deal somewhere.

There simply aren't many 6-foot-7 defensemen who play with an edge, and that scarcity could work in his favor during free agency.
