The Capitals rising star played a big role en route to a 5-2 win.

Ryan Leonard is already making waves on the international stage. The Washington Capitals' rising star delivered an impressive performance in Team USA's preliminary 5-2 victory over Germany, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting World Championship campaign.

Skating on the top line alongside Oliver Moore and Tommy Novak, the 21-year-old forward didn't waste any time making his presence felt. Leonard logged 15:57 minutes of ice time, picking up an assist, a shot on goal, and two penalty minutes while also seeing action on the top power-play unit.

The highlight of the night came on the man advantage, where Leonard showcased his playmaking skills. He set up Ryker Lee with a crisp feed by the side of the net, allowing Lee to sneak a backhand shot high past German goaltender Philipp Grubauer for the game-opening goal. That pivotal score helped pave the way for Team USA's commanding win.

Leonard's strong showing comes on the heels of a breakout rookie campaign with the Capitals, where he notched 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points in 72 games. After getting a taste of NHL action the previous season, he has taken significant strides in rounding out his overall game.

He's the lone Capitals representative at the tournament, though he'll have some familiar company on the Team USA roster in Ryan Lindgren—the younger brother of Washington netminder Charlie Lindgren.

Team USA now heads to Switzerland for the preliminary round, kicking off against the host country on Friday. From there, the Americans will face a challenging group that includes Great Britain, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Hungary, and Austria. The quarterfinals are set for May 28, followed by semifinals on May 30, and the bronze and gold medal games on May 31.

For Caps fans, Leonard's early impact is a promising sign of what's to come—both on the international stage and back in Washington next season.
