When Brian Hartline departed this offseason, Ohio State faced the tall task of replacing a key piece of its coaching staff. But just as Day turned to former NFL defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to shore up the defense last year, the Buckeyes went back to the pro ranks—this time tapping former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith to take over the offense.
Smith, known for his NFL pedigree as both a head coach and offensive coordinator, has already hit the ground running in Columbus. Teaming his experience with Day’s high-flying passing attack creates a tantalizing combination. With stars like Jeremiah Smith, Bo Jackson, and quarterback Julian Sayin in the fold, the Buckeyes offense looks poised to be elite once again.
During a recent appearance on Josh Pate’s show, Day shared an encouraging update on Smith’s transition to college football. “It’s been great to see someone like Matt Patricia come in and really embrace the culture and the fanbase,” Day said. “You’re seeing his personality come out. Arthur Smith is doing the same thing. He’s worked hard on building relationships—right from the moment he walked in the building, with the staff, and then with the players.”
If that sounds familiar, it should. Patricia’s arrival last season was a game-changer, helping Ohio State field one of the nation’s top defenses. If Smith can replicate even a fraction of that success on offense, this hire could be a home run for the Buckeyes.
Smith, 43, hasn’t worked at the college level since 2010, when he was an intern at Ole Miss. But his NFL résumé—including head coaching experience in Atlanta—speaks for itself. The fact that he’s already building strong relationships and fitting into the Buckeyes’ culture is a promising sign.
Of course, if Ohio State’s offense clicks the way many expect, Smith may not be in Columbus for long. Think of it as a Chip Kelly situation: a brilliant offensive mind who helps elevate the program before earning a bigger opportunity. For now, though, Buckeye fans can rest easy knowing their offense is in capable hands.
