Ryan Blaney is a NASCAR Cup Series champion. That’s the headline version of his life right now.

Ryan Blaney is a NASCAR Cup Series champion—that’s the headline. But when he won at Phoenix earlier this year, he didn’t lead with the trophy or the dramatic comeback drive. Instead, he spoke about the anxiety and silence of a hospital room last November. Most fans didn’t fully grasp what he meant until his wife, Gianna, sat down with Samantha Busch on her podcast and shared the harrowing story behind their family’s emotional breaking point.

During the delivery prep for their first child, a nurse noticed the baby’s heart rate had dropped dangerously low. What was planned as a routine delivery turned into an emergency C-section in seconds. Then the doctor looked at Gianna and said, “I want you to prepare yourself. He may not have a heartbeat when he’s born.”

Ryan wasn’t even in the room when they started cutting—there was no time to wait. He walked in, went straight to her side, and they didn’t say a word. They just held each other and waited. “We’re both silent, just holding each other, and we’re just waiting to hear a heartbeat,” Gianna recalled. “One thing in my head the whole time was just let me hear him cry.”

“Thank the Lord, when he came out, after a few seconds, you hear a cry. And that’s all we wanted to hear. And then we both just lost it and bawled our eyes out because we were so frozen waiting for that moment.”

Gianna’s pregnancy itself was a battle. She suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum—severe, persistent vomiting that made it impossible to keep food or prenatal vitamins down for months. Weekly IV treatments were needed just to get nutrients into her body, and acupuncture helped manage the worst of it. Relief only came late in the pregnancy, right as the NASCAR offseason kicked in. Their son, Charley Bennett Blaney, was born on November 17, 2025. The couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary just weeks later, on December 12.

Gianna shared all of this on Samantha Busch’s podcast, a show Busch started specifically to bring these hidden struggles into the open. “This is exactly why I started this podcast,” Busch wrote after posting the episode. For Gianna, saying it out loud was part of the healing process—most of it had never been spoken until then.
