Rutgers basketball just made a major splash in the transfer portal, securing a commitment from one of the nation's most efficient scorers. Darin Smith, the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year from Central Connecticut State, is taking his talents to Piscataway.

The sharpshooting guard wasted no time, committing to the Scarlet Knights shortly after his campus visit on Wednesday. This move continues a successful trend for Head Coach Steve Pikiell, marking the second time in three years Rutgers has landed the NEC's top player, following Jordan Derkack's transfer from Merrimack.

Smith isn't just an award-winner; Rutgers fans may remember him as the catalyst behind CCSU's stunning upset victory over the Knights last season, where he dropped 21 points. He brings a proven, high-level scoring punch, coming off a season where he averaged 20.7 points and 5.4 rebounds while shooting a blistering 37.6% from beyond the arc and nearly 90% from the free-throw line.

With two years of eligibility remaining and a career three-point percentage over 40%, Smith immediately addresses Rutgers's need for perimeter scoring and floor spacing. His arrival fills the ninth of fifteen available scholarships, giving Coach Pikiell six more slots to strategically build a competitive roster for the tough Big Ten schedule ahead.
