Rory McIlroy is the biggest name in the professional game and, as a result, he is crucial to the PGA Tour’s aspirations of securing bumper deals with sponsorship partners.
McIlroy has reached a whole new level in the game over the past year or so, after completing the Grand Slam at The Masters in 2025, and then successfully defending his title earlier this month at Augusta National.
The Northern Irishman is at a level now where he is able to pick and choose which events he plays, regardless of their standing in the game.
It’s fair to say that Rory McIlroy has more than earned that right, but nonetheless, his latest decision has highlighted a big problem for the PGA Tour.
McIlroy will not be playing a PGA Tour Signature Event for the second time in a row next week, after he didn’t commit to the Cadillac Championship field.
And many golf fans are angry that this is a situation that has been allowed to happen.
Numerous golf fans were not happy at all with the fact that McIlroy will not be in Miami next week.
One fan asked: “What happened to only being allowed to skip one signature event a year?“
While another went into real detail explaining his disappointment: “Rory can play when he likes. This is what the PGA Tour has become,” X user Darren Cope exclaimed.
“Meaningless events. Not allowing Rahm/Bryson etc to play is childish and hurts the event. I’d be furious with the PGA Tour as a major sponsor. They should have never locked them out and backed their product. But they couldn’t I guess, because as we all found out, the PGA Tour product wasn’t fair. Hence the pay rises.“
Another golf fan urged the PGA Tour to fix the issue as soon as possible.
“Another reason the PGA Tour and others need to control their fields better for the sake of sponsors and charities,“ the fan stated.
“I have a feeling the players have run too long on their leash and the game is broken – too much player $$ for not enough sponsor commitment and charity benefit. FIX IT!“
Meanwhile, one fan urged the PGA Tour to make a change: “Rory has the right to do so, but it’s another shining example of what is broken: It is the only major sports organization in which its star players don’t have to compete on a regular basis.“
And the comments kept coming with fans stating, “Every professional golfer dreams to play in a PGA Tour event, let alone a signature event. Rory thinks he’s entitled,“ and, “Thought players could only miss one. Guess Rory now thinks he’s bigger than the PGA Tour.“
While another fan suggested that the onus is on the PGA Tour to make things right: “The PGA Tour needs to sort its schedule out. Having two signature events in two consecutive weeks before a major means top players would be playing three weeks in a row, and Rory rightly doesn’t want to do that. I’ll bet Scottie doesn’t play the Truist and no one will have any issue with it!“
Brian Rolapp clearly has a lot of work to do moving forward.
It will be incredibly interesting to see what happens with the PGA Tour schedule in the future.
The Sentry has already been wiped from the schedule from 2027 onwards, but Rolapp has to ensure that the Signature Events are more spaced out as well.
The whole point of the designated events was to ensure that the best players on the PGA Tour competed against each other more regularly.
