Rory McIlroy endured one of the toughest days of his professional career during the third round of the Truist Championship on Saturday, posting what statistically ranks as the ninth-worst round of his entire career.

The Northern Irishman entered the weekend with momentum after catching fire on the back nine of his second round Friday, vaulting himself back into contention at Quail Hollow. When he birdied his opening hole Saturday, it seemed the six-time major champion was poised for another charge up the leaderboard.

Instead, everything unraveled. McIlroy carded a four-over-par 74, highlighted by a disastrous stretch where he made six bogeys in 10 holes. The result left him 13 strokes behind leader Alex Fitzpatrick, a staggering gap for a player of his caliber.

According to golf analyst Rick Gehman, McIlroy's third-round performance was historically poor. In his 1,350th round as a professional, he lost a whopping 5.292 strokes to the field. The only bright spot was his driving, where he ranked 10th in strokes gained off the tee. But the rest of his game was out of sync: he ranked 52nd in strokes gained approach, 72nd around the greens, and 64th on the putting surface.

With the PGA Championship just four days away, McIlroy's form in Charlotte is a major concern. For a player who has built his reputation on bouncing back, Saturday's round was a stark reminder that even the best can have off days. Golf fans will be watching closely to see if he can rediscover his rhythm before the season's second major.
