Chargers rookie Jake Slaughter was named as a rookie picked outside round one who could make a big impact in 2026.

The Los Angeles Chargers have completely overhauled their interior offensive line this offseason, and rookie Jake Slaughter is at the center of the transformation—literally and figuratively. After watching quarterback Justin Herbert get sacked a staggering 54 times in 2025, the Chargers knew drastic changes were needed. They responded by signing veteran center Tyler Biadasz and guard Cole Strange, then used the 63rd overall pick in the 2026 draft to select Slaughter, a versatile lineman from Florida.

Slaughter, who played all 2,053 of his college snaps at center, is projected to shift to guard in the NFL. ESPN's Field Yates recently named him one of 20 rookies (10 offense, 10 defense) drafted outside the first round who could make an immediate impact. "Slaughter is tough and rugged while possessing the lateral quickness to excel in a zone-blocking scheme," Yates wrote. "He should make an instant impact."

The Chargers' offensive line room looks entirely different from a year ago. The departure of Greg Roman's power-run philosophy has given way to Mike McDaniel's zone-blocking scheme, favoring athletic movers over throwback mauler types. Slaughter fits this new identity perfectly—his Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 9.97 out of 10.00 ranks third among all centers from 1987 to 2026.

If Slaughter can make a smooth transition to guard, the Chargers may have found a steal in the second round. If not, the pick could become a cautionary tale. Either way, with a new-look line and a renewed commitment to protecting Herbert, the 2026 season is shaping up to be a pivotal one for Los Angeles.
