The Seattle Kraken are set for a significant front-office change this offseason, announcing that President of Hockey Operations Ron Francis will step down from his role. The decision, described as mutual, marks the end of a foundational era for the NHL's 32nd franchise.

Francis, 63, has been a central figure in the Kraken's short history. Initially hired as the team's first General Manager, he was promoted to President of Hockey Operations just last April. His tenure saw the organization built literally from the ground up, navigating an expansion draft and establishing the team's initial identity.

The announcement comes during a challenging season for the club. With a record of 32-34-11 and having lost 10 of their last 11 games, the Kraken are poised to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third consecutive year. Their last postseason appearance was a memorable 2022-23 run that ended in a hard-fought, seven-game second-round series against the Dallas Stars.

In a statement, co-owner Tod Leiweke acknowledged Francis's pivotal role, saying, "From a small office in Lower Queen Anne to the 32nd NHL franchise, Ron’s leadership and vision were instrumental in building this franchise from the ground up."

Francis echoed the sentiment of a chapter closing, stating, "It has been an honor to help launch and lead the Seattle Kraken over the past seven years... This organization has a bright future, and I’m grateful to have been part of its beginning." As the season concludes, the search for a new hockey operations leader will become a top priority, signaling a new direction for Seattle's hockey future.
