The current scandal surrounding New England Patriots' head coach Mike Vrabel and former NFL insider Dianna Russini is drawing plenty of attention, and the NFL may not think it's a great look for the league.
Vrabel is one of the most recognizable coaches in the league, and just led a team to the Super Bowl. Affairs of a rumor are not a good look for him or the NFL, but before the NFL Draft, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell basically confirmed that the league will not step in and take action.
"This is not a personal conduct policy... as we know it today," Goodell told Mike Greenberg before the draft. "It's a personal matter, and we'll leave it at that."
"I think the teams handle these matters when they're personal matters, and they have a lot more information that can benefit everyone involved," Goodell noted when asked if the league would take any action.
Vrabel's alleged affair with Russini does not violate the league's personal conduct policy, and did not cross any lines in regard to his role as a head coach. However, Russini crossed some lines in her profession and has since resigned from The Athletic.
Photos of Vrabel and Russini at a luxury hotel in Arizona surfaced earlier this month. At the time, Vrabel and Russini both noted that they were there with a group and that the pictures were nothing to be concerned with.
However, on Thursday, more pictures surfaced. The newly released images showed Vrabel and Russini kissing at a bar in 2020. Vrabel spoke to the media just before the draft and noted that his original statement, calling the original pictures "laughable," was an attempt to protect his family.
Even though Vrabel has not violated any league policies, his actions are impacting his team and his ability to coach. He will miss Day 3 of the draft to be with his family attending counseling. Vrabel said his family is a priority and he will be doing everything he can to be the best version of himself for them, as well as the Patriots.
Discourse around Vrabel will not stop anytime soon. He did not say whether he would miss more football activities, but noted he would prioritize his family at this time.
Any time Vrabel misses, however, it will not be because of the NFL. It will be a personal decision or a decision made by the Patriots. Unless the league thinks he violated the personal conduct policy, Goodell does not seem to be stepping in.
