Rocky Top is facing a rocky rebuild. After the worst season in program history, the Tennessee Lady Volunteers are now staring down a total roster reset, with every single starter and a top-five recruit departing this offseason.
The exodus became complete this week as freshman guard Jaida Civil entered the transfer portal, marking the eighth player to do so. They join a group of four seniors who have graduated, leaving the cupboard entirely bare for head coach Kim Caldwell. The situation worsened when elite 2026 recruit Oliviyah Edwards, ranked No. 5 nationally, requested a release from her letter of intent.
This mass departure follows a disastrous 16-14 campaign that ended on an eight-game losing streak, including a first-round NCAA Tournament exit to NC State. Off-court turmoil, including a player dismissal and another leaving mid-season, compounded the on-court struggles. Caldwell herself called it "the worst year of my professional career."
The current state is a stark contrast to the glory days of the Pat Summitt era, an eight-time national championship dynasty. Caldwell, now entering her third season, faces the monumental task of rebuilding a roster from scratch. While her first season showed promise with a Sweet 16 run, the collapse this year—despite bringing in the nation's No. 2 freshman class—has set the program back significantly.
With Caldwell's job reportedly safe, the focus shifts entirely to a painstaking offseason of recruitment. She must now sell a new vision to the transfer portal and high school ranks to restore a fallen powerhouse, making this one of the most critical rebuilding jobs in all of college basketball.
