Bayer Leverkusen’s Champions League dreams are hanging by a thread after a crushing 3-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart—and captain Robert Andrich isn't pulling any punches about what went wrong.
In a brutally honest post-match interview, Andrich laid bare the team's shortcomings. "It wasn't enough from anyone," the midfielder told DAZN, before delivering a wider critique that went straight to the heart of Leverkusen's season-long struggles.
"Today was emblematic of our season. As soon as things get tight and tense, we fail to stick together as a team." That's a remarkably open admission from a club captain, and it signals deeper issues within the squad. "That's something that really bothers me because it's a team issue," Andrich added.
The match itself told a familiar story. Leverkusen actually took the lead after just 34 seconds, but from there, the wheels came off. Stuttgart's intensity and quality quickly overwhelmed them, and the visitors never regained control. "We never even came close to beating Stuttgart over the 90 minutes," Andrich admitted.
Speaking later in the mixed zone, the Germany international went even further, questioning the unity inside the dressing room. "We have a lot of personalities who tend to keep things to themselves. We don't have enough people who stick together."
Those words will raise eyebrows among fans and pundits alike, but Andrich was quick to share the blame. "I have a lot to blame myself for," he said. "I've often stood here after games like this where we just couldn't get into the game. The problem has to be somewhere."
With just one Bundesliga matchday left, Die Werkself sit in sixth place. To snatch a Champions League spot, they need a win against Hamburger SV next weekend—plus defeats for both Stuttgart and TSG Hoffenheim. It's a long shot, and Leverkusen know it. For a team that once looked destined for Europe's elite, it's a sobering reality check.
