Robelis Despaigne is thinking big—and we mean big. The Olympic bronze medalist in taekwondo, who stands as one of the most imposing figures in combat sports, has his sights set on a massive showdown with former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. But first, he's got some serious business to handle.
Despaigne (5-2) returns to MMA this Saturday at MVP MMA: Rousey vs. Carano, streaming live on Netflix from the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. It's his first fight since leaving the UFC in 2024, and he's stepping right into the fire against another former UFC heavyweight champion: Junior Dos Santos (21-10). The card, headlined by the long-awaited clash between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, is already generating massive buzz.
For Despaigne, a win over Dos Santos could set up something even bigger. Speaking with Habelmos MMA, the Cuban fighter didn't shy away from calling out one of the most feared heavyweights in the world. "I do see the possibility," Despaigne said. "At the beginning, it wasn't even something that crossed my mind, but over time, many people have asked about it. If I come out winning in this fight, and he wins his fight, I think it would be a great opportunity for me to let the world know who I am by fighting Francis Ngannou."
Ngannou, who also competes on the same card against Philipe Lins, is no stranger to high-stakes matchups. A fight between these two heavy hitters would be a clash of power and prestige—two giants with knockout power and Olympic-level backgrounds. Despaigne, who won bronze in taekwondo at the 2012 London Olympics, brings a unique striking arsenal that could pose problems for even the most seasoned opponents.
But here's the twist: Despaigne signed only a one-fight deal with MVP, and there are no confirmed future MMA events on Netflix yet. Still, the Cuban fighter is optimistic. "I don't know what's going to happen. We haven't talked about that," he said. "But I think with all the attention this event has been getting, we'll see more events this year."
And if that dream fight with Ngannou does materialize? Despaigne wants to raise the stakes even higher. "I think if we both win, we could fight each other, maybe with a belt on the line," he said. "That would be even better."
For now, all eyes are on Saturday. Will Despaigne deliver a statement win over Dos Santos? And if he does, could we be looking at one of the most anticipated heavyweight matchups in recent memory? One thing's for sure: in the world of combat sports, momentum is everything—and Robelis Despaigne is ready to ride it all the way to the top.
