Robelis Despaigne is ready to rewrite his MMA story.
Just a few years ago, the Cuban heavyweight was one of the most electric prospects in the UFC's division. With an Olympic bronze medal in taekwondo (2012) and a highlight-reel start to his MMA career—four consecutive first-round knockouts—Despaigne (5-2) looked like a force of nature. His UFC debut in 2024 was nothing short of spectacular: he flattened Josh Perisan in just 18 seconds, earning a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus.
But then came the fall. Despaigne lost back-to-back unanimous decisions to Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Austin Lane, where his ground game was exposed and exploited. The UFC released him, and the hype train ground to a halt.
Now, nearly two years later, Despaigne returns to MMA after a stint in Karate Combat, where he reminded everyone of his knockout power. On Saturday, he steps into the spotlight at the inaugural MVP MMA card—a historic event streaming on Netflix—to face none other than former UFC champion Junior Dos Santos.
"I never imagined this," Despaigne told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "I thought I would get a call from PFL or just continue in Karate Combat. But this is a huge opportunity. A new company, the first MMA event on Netflix, and a fight against Junior Dos Santos. Everyone knows his quality. He's a former UFC champion, and you can't take him lightly."
Despaigne knows exactly where he needs to improve. His grappling was his undoing in the UFC, and he's spent his time away from MMA working relentlessly to shore up that weakness. While his recent fights in Karate Combat didn't require ground skills, he never stopped drilling takedown defense and submission escapes.
Saturday's fight is more than a comeback—it's a chance to reignite the fire that made him one of the most talked-about heavyweights in the sport. A win over a legend like Dos Santos would send a clear message: Despaigne's ground game is no longer a liability, and the hype is back.
