In a move that defies the typical college football family script, RJ Day—son of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day—has chosen to carve his own path. The three-star quarterback prospect announced his commitment to Northwestern on Sunday, following an official visit to the Wildcats' campus.
RJ, who plays for St. Francis de Sales in Columbus, Ohio, picked Northwestern over offers from Purdue and USF. According to 247Sports, he's ranked as the No. 92 quarterback nationally and the No. 50 player in Ohio for the 2027 recruiting class. His decision to head to Evanston comes just weeks after the Wildcats extended an offer on April 29, with his official visit taking place on May 8.
On the field, RJ has been a standout for the Stallions. A three-year starter, he's thrown for over 1,000 yards each season, totaling 5,714 yards and 54 touchdowns. Last year, he led his team to a 9-3 record while posting a career-best 2,710 yards and 25 touchdowns, cementing his status as the school's all-time passing leader.
For Northwestern, RJ's commitment adds to a growing 2027 class that now includes five pledges, all rated as three-star prospects. The class currently ranks 49th nationally and 14th in the Big Ten, according to 247Sports.
There's an added layer of intrigue for Ohio State and Northwestern fans: the father-son duo will face off almost immediately. The Buckeyes travel to Evanston next season, and Ryan Day holds a perfect 3-0 record against the Wildcats, including a 31-7 win in 2024. It's a storyline that adds plenty of drama to an already compelling matchup.
