ESPN's top NBA broadcast team will be down a key player for Sunday's pivotal Game 4 between the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers on ABC. Lead play-by-play announcer Mike Breen opened the telecast courtside with just Tim Legler by his side, noticeably missing usual third voice Richard Jefferson.

Breen quickly addressed the situation with a touch of humor, joking that Jefferson had been downgraded from "questionable" to "out" due to an illness. "He is really feeling under the weather," Breen explained. "And in honor of Richard tonight, we'll have multiple on-cameras throughout the course of our telecast to pay tribute to our beloved partner."

Legler, ever the pro, added a lighthearted jab: "And I'll be sure to have a beer nearby, as I know Richard would love that."

This marks the first season ESPN has deployed the trio of Breen, Legler, and Jefferson as its premier broadcast booth, after Legler stepped into the role previously held by Doris Burke. The group is slated to call the NBA Finals together for the first time next month, making this a minor but notable hiccup in their chemistry-building journey.

Given the Knicks' commanding 3-0 series lead over the 76ers, Jefferson's absence comes at a relatively low-stakes moment. New York has a chance to clinch a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals on Sunday, but if they don't seal the deal now, it's almost certain to happen later in the series. And as any seasoned sports fan knows, listening to a hoarse broadcaster struggle through a full game is never ideal—so sitting out when under the weather is always the smart play.

For now, fans will get a two-man show from Breen and Legler, a familiar and capable duo that knows how to keep the energy high even when one of their own is sidelined.
