The college basketball transfer portal is heating up, and a major domino has fallen with 7-foot-1 Arizona State freshman Massamba Diop narrowing his focus to two powerhouse programs: Gonzaga and St. John's. Diop, who entered the portal with a telling "do not contact" tag, is expected to make a swift decision in what's being called a toss-up between the Zags and Red Storm.

This isn't the first time Gonzaga has been on Diop's radar. The Bulldogs got a firsthand look at the Senegalese center's talent during a non-conference victory over Arizona State in November, where Diop posted 11 points, four rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. That performance was a microcosm of his impressive freshman campaign, where he averaged 13.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and a staggering 2.1 blocks per game, setting a new ASU freshman record with 69 total rejections.

Diop's defensive prowess, which ranked second in the Big 12 behind only Kansas's Flory Bidunga, is matched by a versatile offensive game. He shot nearly 57% from the field, showcased a developing three-point shot, and had explosive stretches, including three consecutive 20-point games to open conference play. His departure from Arizona State follows the program's coaching change, moving on from Bobby Hurley after 11 seasons.

For Gonzaga, the pursuit of Diop is a direct response to a critical need in the frontcourt. The Zags are rebuilding after losing All-American forward Graham Ike to graduation and saw reserve big man Ismaila Diagne enter the portal. Interestingly, Diagne and Diop share a past, having been roommates while playing for the youth academy of Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid, adding a personal layer to this recruitment battle.

As the offseason chess match continues, landing a two-way force like Massamba Diop would be a program-defining move for either Gonzaga or St. John's, instantly bolstering their rim protection and scoring in the paint for the upcoming season.
