Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Sonny Gray left the team's Marathon Monday win vs. the Detroit Tigers after 2 2/3 innings of work due to right hamstring tightness.
It was reported on Monday night that the Red Sox are placing the three-time All-Star on the 15-day injured list and recalling rookie left-handed reliever Tyler Samaniego.
Multiple reports also said that Gray will have an MRI on Tuesday and with the 36-year-old sidelined for at least 15 days, top pitching prospect Payton Tolle is a top candidate to be called up to the majors.
Tolle was scratched from his scheduled start for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday in case Boston had been rained out on Sunday and had a doubleheader Monday.
Samaniego was called up for his MLB debut on April 8 vs. the Milwaukee Brewers and the southpaw made history, becoming the first Red Sox pitcher in 49 years to record a strikeout on each of his first three career outs.
The former 15th-round pick posted 3 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing no hits, three walks and four strikeouts across three relief outings with Boston before being sent back down to Triple-A on April 14.
