Left fielder Roman Anthony’s errant throw with the game tied in the eighth inning cost the Red Sox two runs in an 8-6 loss to the Brewers on Monday at Fenway Park.

A costly error in the outfield proved decisive for the Boston Red Sox on Monday night, as a young player's struggle with his arm became the focal point of an 8-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at Fenway Park.

With the game tied in the eighth inning, Red Sox left fielder Roman Anthony fielded a Garrett Mitchell single. Despite having plenty of time with baserunner Brice Turang just rounding third, Anthony's throw home was disastrously off-line. The ball skipped past the cutoff man and rolled to the backstop, allowing not only Turang to score from second but also Christian Yelich to race all the way home from first base.

The two-run blunder broke the tie and ultimately sealed the game for Milwaukee. Afterward, the 21-year-old Anthony was brutally honest in his assessment, placing the loss squarely on his shoulders. "It’s terrible. It’s bad baseball and it’s on me," he said. "I didn’t have a shot with that throw. Gotta be better."

This moment highlighted an ongoing challenge for the promising outfielder. Anthony's arm strength and accuracy have been notable concerns early this season, with metrics placing his arm value in the league's bottom percentile. He revealed he's been working extensively with coaches on his footwork and grip to find a solution, but acknowledged there are no excuses for a fundamental mistake in a critical moment.

"It’s just a mix of everything," Anthony admitted. "But at the end of the day, it’s a simple play. It’s got to be at least competitive. And it wasn’t, again." For a team fighting for position, these are the small margins that define a season, and Anthony knows his performance must improve to help his team win.
