Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony has been put on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right wrist, the team announced Thursday before the start of a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. Anthony, 21, hurt his wrist during his first at-bat of Monday’s game at Detroit. Interim manager Chad Tracy said there wasn’t enough progression for Anthony to avoid going on the IL.

The Boston Red Sox will be without one of their brightest young stars for at least the next week and a half. Outfielder Roman Anthony has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right wrist, the team confirmed Thursday just ahead of a pivotal four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.

The injury occurred during Anthony's very first at-bat of Monday's game against the Detroit Tigers. The 21-year-old phenom immediately flew back to Boston to consult with hand specialist Dr. Matthew Leibman, and after two days of limited progress, interim manager Chad Tracy made the call to put him on the shelf.

"Still sore," Tracy said. "I think it's more of a case of 'How are we willing to play short-handed?' We've already done it for two days."

Anthony, spotted wearing a brace on his hand, admitted he hasn't swung a bat since Monday. But despite the setback, he remains optimistic that this will be a brief pause in his season.

"Obviously not where I want to be, but just got to keep getting better every day," Anthony said. "The hand is tricky and I've never dealt with a hand issue before. Getting the news that it's nothing serious is the best news we could have gotten. When the IL stint is over, I plan to be in that game the next day and off the IL."

This marks Anthony's second trip to the IL in as many seasons. Last year, an oblique strain sidelined him for most of September and forced him to miss Boston's wild-card playoff series against the New York Yankees—a tough blow for a player who signed an eight-year, $130 million contract as a rookie just last season.

So far in 2026, Anthony has struggled to find his rhythm at the plate, hitting just .229 with one home run over 130 plate appearances. While the wrist injury certainly won't help his timing, the young outfielder is focused on recovery first.

"Just got to get better as fast as I can," he said.

To fill the roster gap, the Red Sox have called up Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester. For fans looking to stay game-ready themselves, now is a great time to stock up on Red Sox gear—whether you're cheering from the stands or staying active while the team works through this early-season adversity.
