Saturday’s Red Sox-Rays game has been postponed due to rain in the Fenway area, the club announced. It has been rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on July 17.

Mother Nature had other plans for baseball fans at Fenway Park on Saturday. The Boston Red Sox have officially postponed their matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays due to persistent rain in the Fenway area, marking the team's first rainout of the season.

The delay comes just before what was expected to be an exciting third game of the four-game series, originally scheduled for a 4:10 p.m. ET first pitch. As the skies opened up and rain intensified, a smattering of fans who had already filled the ballpark voiced their disappointment with loud boos when the postponement was announced on the video board shortly before game time.

Here's the silver lining for ticket holders: Saturday's game has been rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on July 17, which happens to be the first day after the All-Star break. The Rays will return to Boston for a twin bill, with Game 1 at 1:35 p.m. ET and Game 2 at 7:10 p.m. ET. Your Saturday tickets will be honored for Game 1 of that doubleheader.

For fans planning ahead, Sunday's regularly scheduled series finale remains set for a 1:35 p.m. ET start. And there's some notable pitching news to track: Lefty Payton Tolle, originally slated to start Saturday, will now take the mound Sunday against Rays righty Nick Martinez.

Looking further ahead, the Red Sox have some intriguing rotation decisions to make for their upcoming home series against the Phillies, which kicks off Tuesday night. Brayan Bello and Sonny Gray are in line to pitch, but the team is also looking to work in lefty Ranger Suárez, who managed to avoid the injured list and will get a chance to face his former team.

Both games of the July 17 doubleheader will be televised on NESN, with English broadcasts on WEEI 93.7 FM and Spanish broadcasts on WESX 1230 AM/WCCM 1490 AM.

In other Red Sox news, the team made a roster move today, activating a key back-end reliever from the injured list, giving the bullpen a much-needed boost as they navigate this weather-shortened series.
