Red Sox manager Alex Cora was not pleased that a comment he made recently about giving young players long-term extensions was twisted out of context by some people on social media.

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora found himself in an unexpected firestorm this week, but not for anything that happened on the field. Instead, the controversy stemmed from a comment about team-building strategy that was taken out of context on social media.

The situation began during a nationally televised FOX broadcast on Saturday, where reporter Ken Rosenthal discussed the growing trend of teams signing young stars to long-term contract extensions. Using St. Louis Cardinals shortstop JJ Wetherholt as an example, Rosenthal noted that such deals are often seen as favorable for clubs. He then referenced a conversation with Cora, stating the Red Sox manager pointed out the team dynamics change when you have multiple players on such contracts.

By Monday, Cora was clearly frustrated, addressing the media before a game against the Minnesota Twins. He emphasized his comments were about the general business of baseball, not a critique of his own team's roster. "I think it's (expletive) to be honest with you," Cora stated. "There’s conversations about the Red Sox, there’s conversations about the industry... It’s a great business model. It is. Because you wanna keep your pieces as long as possible, as young as possible, and develop them."

Cora, a former player himself, stressed his understanding of the modern game's financial landscape. He clarified he had no issue with Rosenthal's reporting but was upset that a nuanced discussion about roster construction was twisted into something controversial online. For Cora and the Red Sox, the focus remains on developing and retaining young talent—a strategy every fan hopes leads to sustained success and more memorable October baseball in Boston.
