How much longer will Campbell have to wait?

Kristian Campbell's journey back to the big leagues has hit a few bumps, but the 23-year-old Red Sox prospect is starting to show signs of turning the corner. In a standout moment during Tuesday night's Triple-A Worcester game, Campbell launched a home run off New York Yankees star Carlos Rodón, who was on a rehab assignment. It wasn't the first time Campbell has gotten the better of Rodón—he also hit an opposite-field homer off him at Yankee Stadium last June, even during a tough stretch in the majors.

One home run doesn't guarantee an immediate return to Boston, but it's a promising step. Campbell entered Tuesday with a .343 slugging percentage and finished the night at .398—still not eye-popping, but trending upward. Through 28 games, he's walking more, boosting his batting average to .291, and crushing a 104 mph double to the opposite field to cap off the evening.

Even more encouraging? The praise from Worcester's acting manager, Iggy Suarez, who noticed a shift in Campbell's demeanor before the game even started. "He's not a swag guy, but I can see he's walking a little different," Suarez told the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. "I saw it early in his career in 2023, and I'm starting to see it again now. I'm excited for that."

Campbell's transition to the outfield adds some complexity to his path back to the majors. With Boston already boasting four solid outfielders and Masataka Yoshida handling designated hitter duties, playing time is tight. But if Campbell keeps swinging with the confidence that made him one of baseball's top prospects in 2024—like he's showing now against Triple-A pitchers—he's taking all the right steps toward a second chance.
