The Boston Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 on Wednesday night, but Connor Wong exited the game with an injury.

The Boston Red Sox secured a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night, but the win came with a concerning moment for catcher Connor Wong. In a bizarre sequence during the game, Wong exited early after suffering an ankle injury on a play that had fans holding their breath.

The incident occurred when Wong rose from his crouch to track a pop-up in foul territory. As he moved to make the play, he appeared to trip over Phillies batter Edmundo Sosa, sending him to the ground in obvious discomfort. Fortunately, pitcher Garrett Whitlock sprinted over to make a sliding grab for the out, preventing further damage on the scoreboard. Carlos Narváez took over behind the plate in the following inning.

According to MassLive's Christopher Smith, initial imaging on Wong's ankle came back negative, which is encouraging news for the Red Sox. After the game, Wong provided an update on his condition, keeping a positive outlook despite the scare.

"It's a little sore," Wong said. "I've done this one before. Much worse. So everything we did seemed like it was going to be fine. So kind of see how it is in the morning and go from there."

Reflecting on the unusual play, Wong added: "Kind of just was backing up, trying to get a better angle on it. Must have stepped on him and kind of rolled up. It was kind of, 'Dang, that really hurt.' And then realized that the ball was still in the air, and then heard the crowd and saw Whitlock out of the corner of my eye and glad he made the catch."

With Wong's status to be monitored over the next few days, the Red Sox have depth options ready. Mickey Gasper is available to catch alongside Narváez, giving Boston some flexibility as they assess Wong's recovery. For now, fans can breathe a sigh of relief that the injury appears less severe than it could have been—and can appreciate Whitlock's heads-up effort that kept the Phillies from capitalizing on a bizarre moment.
