Keaton Mitchell is embracing his new chapter with the Los Angeles Chargers, and he couldn't be more excited about it. The 24-year-old running back, who signed a two-year, $9.25 million contract in March after four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, made his first media appearance as a Charger this week—and his enthusiasm was unmistakable.
Mitchell revealed that the Chargers wasted no time showing interest once he hit the open market. "Probably like 20 seconds," he said with a grin. "My agent told me, 'They want to get you on the Zoom right now.'" The warm welcome left a strong impression. "Just the energy they brought... they called me just like that. So, just the energy and the welcome, it was great."
One of the biggest draws for Mitchell was working under offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, whose reputation for developing playmakers is well-known around the league. "Just his passion and his interest in helping everybody. Everybody is dialed in," Mitchell said. "Definitely motivating to be in a room where I feel like I have a chance and a shot to do big things."
Through 26 career games, Mitchell has already flashed game-breaking ability. He's logged 121 carries for 767 rushing yards—an impressive 6.3 yards per carry—along with three touchdowns, plus 19 receptions for 184 yards. His 2023 season was particularly electric, as he averaged a staggering 8.4 yards per carry, turning heads across the NFL.
"I'm explosive, everybody knows that," Mitchell stated with confidence. "But I'm always learning from others, teaching others if they have any questions."
With his 4.37 speed and big-play potential, Mitchell is a natural fit for McDaniel's creative offensive scheme alongside Omarion Hampton. But he's not limiting himself. The former East Carolina standout is also open to contributing on special teams, where he has some experience. "Whatever they need me to do... kick return, gunner... it's cool with me."
For Chargers fans, Mitchell's versatility and team-first attitude signal an exciting addition to a backfield that could be one of the most dynamic in the league. Whether he's blazing through defenses or laying it all out on special teams, Mitchell is ready to make his mark in Los Angeles.
