Big blow for the Rays: Right-hander Ryan Pepiot is officially done for the season after being diagnosed with a right hip injury that requires surgery. Manager Kevin Cash confirmed Friday that Pepiot will undergo the operation on May 13 in Nashville, performed by Dr. Thomas Byrd.
Pepiot hasn't thrown a pitch since the end of spring training. He opened the season on the 15-day injured list before being transferred to the 60-day IL in mid-April, signaling the severity of the issue from the start.
The 28-year-old was expected to be a key piece of Tampa Bay's starting rotation this year. He came over from the Dodgers in a 2024 trade and made 57 starts over the past two seasons, posting a 19-20 record with a solid 3.75 ERA. His debut came with Los Angeles back in 2022.
The good news? Cash says Pepiot should be fully recovered and ready for spring training next year. For now, though, the Rays will have to fill that rotation spot without one of their most reliable arms.
